Focus and Persistence

A world cup summer presents plentiful opportunities for sporting metaphor; but a monthly magazine raises the risk of clever writing being superseded by events on the pitch. So I shall use marathon running as a safer metaphor.

Those of you who have done any long distance running will know the major battle occurs in the head, not the legs or feet. The long-haul of a marathon (a very long time if you are as slow as me) gives far too much opportunity for the mind to wander, and for doubt and indecision over tactics to arise.
