The Kool and the Gang disco floor-filler and karaoke hit may seem an inappropriate theme as we fear continuing pressure on consumer spending, and have had appointment bookings disrupted by snow and ice for the best part of a month. Yet now, more than ever, could be the time to look for things to celebrate in your practice, and to share that celebration with your patients and potential patients

It ain’t what you do

When a chiropractor sells their practice, often the most valuable asset is the list of patients – the so-called goodwill amongst the people you have treated in the past. Yet when most chiropractors consider a marketing initiative to boost patient numbers, that list of happy customers is often the last place they think to look.

Actions speak louder than words

Through my lectures to final-year osteopathy students and a range of other CPD events for qualified practitioners of varied disciplines, I speak to four or five hundred professionals in complementary health care each year. A significant number of those subsequently take up the opportunity to have a follow-up conversation on a one-to-one basis. Of course, I also have the hundreds of client conversations each year.

Are you a busy fool?

A 17th Century poet might be a strange reference for a 21st Century article on running a practice, but John Donne’s phrase resonates with many osteopaths who find themselves working harder and harder, and not smarter. In search of the holy grail

For hundreds of osteopaths that I have spoken to over the years, the ‘Holy Grail’ seems to be a practice with ‘enough’ patient treatments a week, at a steady level, with minimal administration of office tasks or management of people. In my experience the search for the perfect practice is as ongoing as a Dan Brown novel on the other Holy Grail, but there are six key aspects osteopaths can work on to get them closer.
