A world cup summer presents plentiful opportunities for sporting metaphor; but a monthly magazine raises the risk of clever writing being superseded by events on the pitch. So I shall use marathon running as a safer metaphor.
Those of you who have done any long distance running will know the major battle occurs in the head, not the legs or feet. The long-haul of a marathon (a very long time if you are as slow as me) gives far too much opportunity for the mind to wander, and for doubt and indecision over tactics to arise.

AT PAINLESS PRACTICE we work with practitioners across a range of professions, and we have seen chiropractic and homoeopathic clients face intense scrutiny over recent months. It is clear that sceptics are starting to turn their attention to osteopaths, and many in this profession are feeling the pressure.

It is hard to believe that Paula is close to half way through her six month prize of free business coaching, patient management software and telephone answering. In the hubbub of practice and family life, the weeks seem to pass by at an alarming rate; yet another reason to proactively manage what you are doing each week and month, to avoid drift.

The most recent business coaching call with Paula started well: “We’ve just had the best month in the last six months in terms of treatment numbers”, she told me. “That’s great” I replied, “what do you think caused that?”
Paula replied in a way I suspect most of you would – “No idea”, and that is the problem with marketing a business – we don’t always know what works, or when. And that’s how we fall into the trap of floundering from one idea to the next, striving just to be doing something. So part of the task for Paula and I in recent weeks has been to avoid that trap and be a bit more proactive.

Last month I described how Paula had felt that all the issues in her business, and life, were like a plate of spaghetti, and she didn’t know how to unravel it. This is very common, so in the lest few weeks we have focussed on setting a strong foundation to allow her to get the most from the three elements of business support: the coaching, the practice management software and the telephone answering service.

Paula’s six month prize of support from TM2, Ideal Receptionist and Painless Practice is due to start on 1st March so at the time of writing all three companies, and Paula, are putting in place the arrangements ready to start. Last month I explained how we had taken a “case history” of the current status of Paula’s practice and the challenges and frustrations she was facing. This gave us a clear picture of where she was before we started.
